Head coach of the Black Stars, Chris Hughton has admitted they will have to improve in terms of performance and he is saying this on the back of the team's recent string of poor performances.
The four-time African champions got held by Namibia to a goalless draw last Monday night at the Baba Yara Stadium in a preparatory friendly.
The team have been in camp since last week in Kumasi, training intensively and are hoping to have themselves adequately prepared for the tournament which commences in few days from now.
Speaking after the Namibia draw, the ex- Brighton and Nottingham Forest manager, has admitted they will have to give a better performance at the AFCON and also hopes they don't encounter injury problems in the course of the tourney.
"How far we can go depends on the performances that we can put in. One thing I know is that this is a group of players that want to do well. And if you have a group of players that desperately want to do well you never know what can happen and I certainly don’t want to be a head coach of a team that doesn’t think that we have a chance of winning it,” Chris Hughton told the press.
"That has to be the mentality going into the tournament but we know we have to play well. Things have to go our way, we have to be fortunate with injuries and we have to be very optimistic that we can do very well.”
The Black Stars are expected to depart to Cote D'Ivoire on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, for the competition.
Ghana will kickstart their campaign on Sunday, January 14, against the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde at 20:00GMT in Abidjan.
