The 2023/24 Ghana Premier League came to an unexpected close on Sunday as Accra Great Olympics was awarded a 3-0 victory and three points against Real Tamale United, who failed to show up for their final match of the season.
Despite arriving at the Accra Sports Stadium and completing their warm-up, Real Tamale United never took to the field, leaving the match officials with no choice but to award the win to Accra Great Olympics.
The unusual turn of events marked another chapter in Real Tamale United's disastrous season, which was marred by player boycotts due to unpaid salaries.
Unfortunately for Accra Great Olympics, their default victory was not enough to save them from relegation. The team's poor performance throughout the season saw them finish 16th in the league table with 44 points, joining Bofoakwa Tano and Real Tamale United in the Division One League.
Real Tamale United, meanwhile, concluded their season in 18th place with 31 points after 34 games.
The unusual conclusion to the season marked a disappointing end to the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League campaign for Accra Great Olympics and Real Tamale United, who will look to regroup and come back stronger next season.
