Ghanaian singer and songwriter King Promise has opened up about how legendary midfielder Michael Essien inspired his deep, long-lasting love for Chelsea Football Club.
Essien, who is now an assistant coach at Danish side FC Nordsjaelland, remains one of the most iconic African players to feature for the Blues. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he helped the club win the UEFA Champions League, multiple Premier League titles, and several domestic trophies. The former Black Stars star joined Chelsea in 2005 for £24.4 million and cemented his place as a key figure before leaving in 2014.
While at Stamford Bridge creating content ahead of the release of his new single Bad Habits featuring Davido — set for release on Friday, November 21 — King Promise revealed that Essien was the reason he became a Chelsea supporter.
“I always loved football, but my love for Chelsea started because of Michael Essien, because he was a Ghanaian legend and he played for this lovely club,” he told Chelsea media. “I was rallying behind him while he was having such a great time at such a prestigious club, but even after he left, Chelsea remained the club in my heart. This is my family — but it all started because of Michael Essien.”
Essien continues to be celebrated at Chelsea for his remarkable contributions and enduring legacy at the club.
