Egyptian football giants, Al Ahly SC, have formally reached out to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) requesting a postponement of their upcoming match against Ghanaian champions, Medeama SC.
In a statement released on Wednesday evening, Al Ahly disclosed that their travel plans were disrupted due to unforeseen circumstances. Despite their journey commencing, an unexpected collision with the fuselage during refuelling in Accra led to a mechanical malfunction, halting their progress.
Efforts to resolve the issue proved unsuccessful, leaving the Al Ahly delegation stranded in Accra overnight. Despite attempts to secure an alternative flight, their efforts were in vain.
As a result, the Al Ahly contingent will remain in Accra overnight, aiming to catch the earliest flight to Kumasi on Thursday morning. However, competition regulations mandate visiting teams to undergo at least one training session at the match venue before matchday.
Given their anticipated late arrival on Thursday, conducting training on the same day becomes improbable, raising concerns about jet lag and physical readiness. In light of these challenges, Al Ahly has communicated with CAF, ostensibly seeking a postponement of Friday’s fixture to Saturday.
Al Ahly currently leads Group D with six points, while Medeama SC sits at the bottom of the group with four points. With two matches remaining to conclude the group stage, the outcome of this encounter carries significant implications for both teams.
