Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka has expressed confidence ahead of the highly anticipated Unity Cup match against Ghana’s Black Stars, scheduled for May 28, 2025, at the Gtech Community Stadium in West London.
The fixture will see the two West African powerhouses reignite their fierce football rivalry in a friendly aimed at promoting unity.
Onyeka, currently on loan at Bundesliga side Augsburg from Premier League club Brentford, is expected to be named in Nigeria’s squad for the match, which takes place at the home ground of his parent club.
“I’m looking forward to that game,” Onyeka told Joy Sports. “It’s always a big rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana. It’s also a good opportunity to bring the country together, and hopefully, we’ll win against Ghana.”
The Super Eagles, who are currently struggling in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, trail behind Group I leaders Ghana. However, Onyeka remains optimistic about Nigeria’s chances of making it to the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
“We still have a chance to qualify. We have to win our remaining four matches and hopefully secure a spot at the World Cup,” he said.
Onyeka also expressed disappointment over Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite their strong showing in the World Cup qualifiers.
“I was sad for them. I know they didn’t have a great qualifying campaign, but they’re doing well in the World Cup qualifiers,” he noted.
“It’s always good to have Ghana in international tournaments—I have friends in the team and it’s great to see them compete at the highest level.”
The Unity Cup promises to be a thrilling encounter as both nations look to assert dominance while building momentum ahead of crucial international fixtures.
