South African Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan, along with two other individuals, has been arrested on charges related to a R1.3 million fraud and theft scheme.
Jordaan, along with a 55-year-old SAFA executive and a 46-year-old businessman, is expected to appear in the Specialized Commercial Crimes Court at the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
Colonel Katlego Mogale, spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), confirmed that arrest warrants were executed on Wednesday morning following a detailed investigation by the Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit based in Johannesburg.
“These arrests follow an in-depth investigation into allegations of fraud and theft amounting to R1.3 million,” Mogale stated.
The charges allege that between 2014 and 2018, Jordaan misused SAFA’s resources for personal gain. This includes hiring a private security firm for his personal protection and a public relations company, both without the necessary approval from the SAFA board.
In March, Hawks officers executed search and seizure warrants at SAFA’s offices, collecting electronic devices and documents to support their investigation. The evidence seized during this raid ultimately led to the arrests.
