J.E Sarpong, a former coach of Asante Kotoko and Great Olympics, expressed his belief that Asamoah Gyan retired from football with a sense of pain and unfinished business.
Gyan, who holds the record as Ghana's all-time leading goalscorer, recently announced his retirement from active football.
According to Sarpong, the veteran trainer, Gyan still had more to offer to the national team but circumstances have compelled him to retire.
Sarpong highlighted Gyan's dedication and love for the country, mentioning how he would go the extra mile, even chartering a whole plane to ensure his teammates arrived on time for tournaments.
He further noted that Gyan's retirement was accompanied by a sense of hurt and unfulfilled aspirations. Sarpong explained that retirement is usually a moment of happiness for athletes, signaling the completion of their work. However, Gyan's emotional reaction indicates that he feels there is unfinished business, but circumstances have forced him to call it quits.
Expressing his sentiments on Accra-based Original FM, Sarpong stated, "Asamoah Gyan is someone who can charter a whole plane and pick a whole team to Ghana for a tournament I mean a competition. Because he doesn't want his colleagues to be late a sign of maturity and a sign of a love for the country and a love for a team so what else do you want him to do? No (I am not pleased with his ending) he had more to give to the nation," he told Accra-based Original FM as monitored by Footballghana.com.
"He has pained and he retired with hurt in him. Everybody who will retire if they are talking they talk with happiness I have finished my work that is when you can't kick again. But for someone to weep on set it means he has a job undone but he has been forced by circumstances to call it quits," he added.
Gyan's last appearance for the Black Stars was during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt.
