Bibiani GoldStars Chief Executive Officer, Akwasi Adu, has publicly supported the proposal to extend the Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidential term limit from two to three terms, arguing that it would bring consistency to the association’s statutes.

Speaking to Citi Sports during the GFA’s 31st Ordinary Congress in Prampram, Adu pointed out that Executive Council (EXCO) members are already allowed to serve three terms, and as the GFA president is also a member of the EXCO, the same provision should apply.

“I’m for it. Why? Because I want the statutes to be clean,” Adu explained. “At a point in time, the statutes say the EXCO members can go for three terms and the GFA president is part of the EXCO. If you then say the president cannot do the same, it becomes conflicting and confusing.”

Adu emphasized that his stance is not intended to favour the current GFA president, Kurt Okraku, but rather to ensure clarity and fairness in the governance framework.

“This is not for Kurt. Other football federations have accepted similar statutes, FIFA has accepted it, and the government too. If at the end of his second term he is underperforming, we can simply vote against him. It’s not a guarantee that he will be president for three terms; his work will speak for itself,” he added.

The proposed amendment, which has stirred debate across the football community, aims to align the GFA president’s eligibility with that of EXCO members, raising discussions about leadership continuity, accountability, and the long-term direction of Ghana football governance.
