Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has stated that his main concern ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is seeing the Black Stars advance from Group L, rather than focusing on their high-profile clash with England.

The four-time African champions, making their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. Ghana will open their tournament against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and conclude group action against Croatia on June 27.

Speaking in New York during the launch of Ghana’s World Cup kit by PUMA, Gyan, the country’s all-time leading scorer, acknowledged England’s strength but emphasized the broader goal for the team.

"We are playing against England, we are in the same group. You know, on paper, England, of course, is one of the best in the world right now," Gyan, who remains the country's all-time leading goalscorer, said.

"You know, but people are optimistic about that game. To play against England. I'm not thinking about playing England; I just want Ghana to qualify from the group stage to go to the next stage of the competition, so we'll see what happens. But Ghana against England is going to be a very, very good game," he added.

As part of their preparations, the Black Stars are scheduled to play two high-profile friendlies: against Austria in Vienna on March 27 and Germany in Stuttgart on March 30, ahead of the summer tournament co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
