Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan paid an emotional tribute to the coach who discovered his talent, Josef Emmanuel Sarpong, during his unveiling as ambassador for Ghana’s national teams and colts football.
The well-attended ceremony took place at the Pelican Hotel in Cantonments, Accra on Wednesday, with several leading figures from sports and politics present for the occasion.
Coach Sarpong was among the guests at the event, leading to a touching reunion with Gyan, widely regarded as one of Ghana’s greatest footballers.
The veteran trainer first met Gyan at Accra Academy, where he helped develop the striker’s talent during his early football years.
In a heartfelt moment, Gyan presented a jersey to his former coach as the pair shared memories from their time together.
The former Black Stars striker also acknowledged several of his ex-teammates at the ceremony, including Stephen Appiah, Prince Tagoe and Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu.
Speaking about his new ambassadorial role, Gyan said: “I am truly honoured by this recognition. I want to thank the President and the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association for believing in me and entrusting me with this responsibility.
“Ghana football has given me everything, and I will continue to serve this country with passion and dedication.”
Gyan remains one of Africa’s most celebrated footballers. He is Ghana’s all-time leading scorer and also holds the record as Africa’s top scorer in FIFA World Cup history.
