Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has revealed he went through depression about a year ago, using his experience to encourage others to speak out and seek help during difficult periods in life.
An emotional Gyan made the disclosure on Wednesday during his unveiling as a Ghana Football Association ambassador at the Pelican Hotel in Accra.
“About a year ago, I had problems which led to depression,” Gyan said during the ceremony. “Everybody can go through this stuff.”
The event celebrated the former striker’s contribution to Ghana football and officially introduced him as one of the ambassadors supporting the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Gyan remains Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals for the national team and is widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest footballers.
The former Sunderland forward represented Ghana at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups and famously scored the Black Stars’ first-ever World Cup goal against the Czech Republic in Germany in 2006.
In his new ambassadorial role, Gyan is expected to lead promotional activities, fan engagement programmes and campaigns aimed at rallying support for the Black Stars ahead of the tournament in North America.
He will also represent the Ghana Football Association at official events while supporting the promotion of Ghana’s national teams and youth football development.
The ceremony was attended by several football personalities, former players, corporate partners and members of the media.
