Head coach of Sudan national team, James Kwesi Appiah seriously wants to see Ghana make it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup but honestly added the team needs unity and cohesion at the moment to make it happen.

The Black Stars have been very shambolic recently in terms of performance on the pitch having had an abysmal campaign in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers recording not a single win for the first time ever in a group with Angola, Sudan and Niger.

The four-time African champions within this period also suffered two home loses including a 0-1 loss to the Black Antelopes ending the country's almost twenty-five years home record in Kumasi.

One of the main issues many believe it is causing problem currently and could cause so much havoc to the team's performance going forward is the captaincy issue.

Leicester City forward Jordan Ayew has now been named the new substantive skipper after both Thomas Partey and Kudus Mohammed all decided to pull out.

Speaking in a recent interview, coach Kwesi Appiah advised the captaincy needs attention as he feels if it is resolved and unity prevails, it will be very crucial in helping Ghana find their form and will do well in the World Cup qualifiers.

"I am hoping that what I have heard is true, that they’re trying to sort out the captaincy issue. If there are other issues, I hope they resolve them," Appiah said.

"Without unity, we cannot achieve anything, so I hope and pray that Ghana will qualify for the World Cup."

Ghana's coach Otto Addo is expected to announce his squad in the coming weeks for games against Chad and Madagascar in match-day five and six of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

James Kwesi Appiah is currently the head coach of Sudan and has qualified them to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations which will be held in Morocco later this year.
