Ghana’s Sports Minister, Kofi Adams, has confirmed that he will not recommend allocating government funds to send supporters to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Speaking to Peace FM, Adams explained that the country’s current financial constraints make such an initiative impractical.
"Of course, there’s no game or tournament we don’t want to have supporters at, but whether government funds will be used to send them is a different matter. So far, government has not indicated any plans to fund supporters’ travel, and I don’t think it’s something I would recommend," he said.
Adams emphasized that the money could be better spent on developing sports infrastructure across the country. "We are in a period of austerity. We need funds to build sports facilities in Ghana. Spending government money to transport supporters all the way to America could instead build five multipurpose parks in local communities," he added.
He suggested alternative ways for fans to attend the tournament. "There are plenty of Ghanaians living in those areas. Anyone who wants to go can fund their own trip, and we can facilitate travel documents. Alternatively, we could mobilize corporate support from both private and public sectors to assist fans. That would be a more practical approach than using government funds," Adams concluded.
