Former Youth and Sports Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has urged for a complete overhaul of sports in Ghana following the Black Stars' failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be held in Morocco next year.
This marks the first time in 20 years that Ghana will miss out on the tournament, after finishing last in Group F with just three points from six matches, without a win.
In an interview with Channel One TV, Afriyie Ankrah expressed his disappointment over the state of sports in the country, particularly the treatment of the Black Stars during their recent qualifier. He was shocked by the hostile reaction from the crowd when Mohammed Kudus was about to take a penalty, a moment that he described as "very, very sad."
"I’ve never seen anything like that," he remarked. "It’s time for the entire country to take a closer look at the Black Stars, football, and sports as a whole. We need to rethink everything—it’s time for a reset."
In the aftermath of Ghana’s failure to qualify for AFCON 2025, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has dissolved the Black Stars' Management Committee. The GFA's Executive Council is set to meet today to discuss the future of head coach Otto Addo.
