Coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has expressed happiness after leading Gor Mahia to the Kenyan Premier League title this season.
The K'Ogalo secured the championship with a game left to play after AFC Leopards lost their final match, which ended their hopes of catching up in the title race.
Akonnor said winning the league was not easy because of pressure from fans, but he was proud of what the team achieved.
“It’s always a great feeling irrespective of the club, to win a title. It is always challenging due to the demands of the fans. But it is a very joyful moment for our fans and myself and the technical team.”
Speaking to Graphic Sports, the former Ghana coach said he was happy to deliver the club’s first league title in two years and hopes to continue winning in the future.
“I’m very excited to have guided the team to win the league this season, and I hope to continue like this next season,” he said.
Reports say AFC Leopards even tried to take legal action to delay Gor Mahia’s final match, but their defeat confirmed the title for Akonnor’s team.
This victory gives Gor Mahia their 22nd league title, strengthening their place as one of Kenya’s top football clubs.
The win also means Gor Mahia will play in next season’s CAF Champions League.
Akonnor says the team will prepare well for the competition and wants them to perform strongly on the continental stage, not just take part.
“We are going to prepare very well because we do not want to go there as mere participants,” he added.
