Former Ghana coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor believes the Black Stars have what it takes to progress from their group at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

It will be Ghana’s fifth appearance at the tournament, having previously featured in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022, with their best performance coming in 2010 when they reached the quarter-finals.

The four-time African champions have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars are currently in Vienna preparing for their friendly against Austria on March 27 at the Ernst Happel Stadium before they take on Germany on March 30, as part of their preparations for the tournament.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, the ex- Ghana captain is confident the group presents a good opportunity for Ghana to advance.

“It’s a manageable group; we can achieve success and qualify for the next stage,” he said.

“Our technical team has been strengthened, so they will do a good job. We can go as far as we can depending on our determination and how strategic we are, and ensuring every needed tool is working well,” he added.

Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and concluding the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

CK Akonnor, who captained Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, during his heir days, is currently the head coach of Kenyan giants Gor Mahia, who are currently seven points clear at the summit of the league and on the verge of their 22nd title
