Former Hearts of Oak coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor isn’t holding back in terms of poor officiating in the Ghana Premier League.
In a bold statement that’s already stirring debate across Ghana’s football circles, the respected tactician who previously coached the Black Stars has called for urgent improvements in officiating in the Ghana Premier League ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Speaking in an interview, Akonnor—known for his calm, no-nonsense approach—said what many fans and stakeholders have been grumbling about all year: “Match officiating is a big problem.”
The former Asante Kotoko and Dreams FC boss cited inconsistent calls, questionable penalties, and poor game management as key issues dragging the league’s credibility through the mud.
“And I’ve heard it, what are you telling me? I’ve seen videos. Whether it’s true or not, I don’t have the evidence, but these things keep coming,” Akonnor told Citi Sports firmly.
Akonnor’s comments come at a time when officiating in the GPL has become a hot-button issue, with multiple clubs voicing frustration over what they describe as “blatant bias” and “match-deciding blunders.”
With the new season just months away, the pressure is now on the Ghana Football Association to respond—not just with promises, but with action.
