A Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member, Nana Oduro Sarfo, has revealed that clubs participating in the Ghana Premier League are not receiving any financial benefits from the league's current television broadcasts.
Following the termination of their contract with StarTimes after the 2023/24 season due to a breach of agreement, the GFA entered into broadcasting deals with Metro TV, NET2 TV, AFA Sports, Original TV, and Globe TV to air the matches.
However, Sarfo disclosed that the revenue generated from these television deals is insufficient to provide financial support to the clubs. In an interview with Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM, he explained that the GFA is aware of the financial strain on clubs and is working to find solutions.
"Ghana Premier League clubs receive no financial gains from the current TV broadcasts of the league. There is an EXCO meeting scheduled for Tuesday to explore possible financial solutions for clubs," he told Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM.
This revelation has sparked concerns among sports enthusiasts and analysts, who argue that the poor quality of the broadcasts is affecting the league's appeal and marketability. Many believe that improving the coverage quality could help attract better sponsorship deals and financial support for the struggling clubs.
