A senior official at Asante Kotoko has shed light on the controversial decision not to renew the contract of long-serving midfielder Justice Blay, citing repeated acts of indiscipline, drunkenness, and disruptive behavior in camp as key reasons behind the club’s move.
Speaking anonymously on Kessben FM’s sports show, the Kotoko executive claimed that the player’s off-field conduct had become increasingly intolerable, despite previous efforts to reintegrate and rehabilitate him.
“For Blay, it was coach Ogum who pleaded on his behalf last season. He [Justice Blay] was part of those indisciplined players who were sacked. It took Coach Ogum’s intervention, but he has still not stopped his acts of indiscipline and revolt in the club,” the official stated.
According to the source, Blay’s attitude, especially as a senior figure in the squad, had a negative influence on team morale.
“He is a long-serving player, and one cannot hide his character in camp. The club can no longer tolerate his drunkenness. Management has sat him down several times, but he is not ready to change,” the official revealed.
“He moves out of the house on his own accord, disregards team instructions, and his behavior sets a bad example for the younger players. No serious club will tolerate such indiscipline.”
Justice Blay’s exit has sparked widespread debate among the Kotoko fanbase, with some expressing disappointment over his unceremonious departure, given his past contributions on the pitch. The midfielder was a key part of the Porcupine Warriors’ midfield engine and once captained the side.
However, this revelation suggests a long-standing internal struggle between the player and club hierarchy—one that ultimately led to a final decision to part ways.
Blay, who is now a free agent, has yet to publicly respond to the allegations. His next destination remains uncertain amid concerns that his off-field reputation could affect interest from other top-tier clubs.
Asante Kotoko, meanwhile, are undergoing a squad overhaul ahead of the 2025/26 season, particularly with their CAF Confederation Cup campaign looming, and are expected to announce several incoming transfers in the coming weeks.
