Former Asante Kotoko SC midfielder Edmund Owusu Ansah has expressed concern over what he describes as the declining standard of the Ghana Premier League, insisting the overall quality of football has dropped significantly.

The ex-footballer believes the domestic competition is far from its best level, claiming teams now struggle to maintain basic possession and cohesion during matches.

Speaking to 3Sports, Owusu Ansah said it has become rare to see teams string together even a short sequence of passes.

“The standard of the Ghana Premier League is not at its best. The quality is low, and it is difficult to see teams connect even up to ten passes,” he said.

Beyond technical quality, the former midfielder also criticized the attitude of modern-day players, arguing that a lack of humility and respect is hindering their development.

“Current Ghana Premier League players don’t even give respect to themselves like we did in our time. Many feel they have already made it, and you can’t advise them,” he stated.
“Pride is affecting them. Once journalists start praising them, they believe they have arrived instead of understanding that hard work brought them there.”

Owusu Ansah added that the declining standards partly explain why Ghanaian clubs have struggled to compete strongly in recent CAF inter-club competitions, where teams from the country have found it difficult to match their continental counterparts.
