Substitute Tawanda Chirewa scored a late equaliser to deny the Super Eagles of Nigeria from securing a consecutive victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Zimbabwe delivered an impressive performance to hold Nigeria to a 1-1 stalemate in the penultimate Group C fixture at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Eric Chelle's side hopes of recording a second win in the qualifying campaign were dented by a late equaliser after Victor Osimhen had given the Super Eagles a lead in the 74th minute of the game.

The Warriors of Zimbabwe faced the three-time African champions with a different game plan after sharing spoils with Benin in the matchday five fixture on Thursday.

Nigeria failed to break into the defence of the visitors as Zimbabwe continued to poise as threat enjoying majority of the possession in the first half.

However, the Zimbabweans couldn't make their two glaring goal opportunities count as the first half ended in a scoreless draw.

In the second half, Nigeria took over possession in the early minutes, but they failed to locate their target man – Victor Osimhen – to give them a lead before the hour mark.

Oshimen found the back of the net for the Super Eagles in the 74th minute when he brilliantly headed a cross delivered by Nottingham Forest's Aina Ola.

The Warriors of Zimbabwe came close to levelling the score through Knowledge Musona in the 79th minute, but his strike was denied by the woodwork.

21-year-old Tawanda Chirewa, who had been introduced as a replacement for Terrence Dzvukamanja in the 80th minute, snatched the leveller for Zimbabwe with a fine strike in the 90th minute.

Following the draw, Nigeria currently lies in 4th position with seven points, while Zimbabwe sits at the bottom with just four points after matchday 6.

South Africa has extended its lead on top of Group C to 13 points, five points clear of Rwanda and Benin, occupying third and fourth places, respectively.
