You've been reading my write-ups on players, you might have not heard or have no idea about who has Ghanaian ancestry. One player making waves and has taken women's football by storm in the Nordic region (northern islands) of Europe and Germany is Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir.
The 21-year old was born in Keflavík, a small town of around 20,000 people, some 50km southwest of the capital Reykjavík, to an Icelandic father and a Ghanaian mother. She is currently based in northwestern German state of Lower Saxony where she plays her club football for the women's team of VfL Wolfsburg.
In December 2020, Jónsdóttir signed with VfL Wolfsburg. but only made her She-Wolves debut at the start of the second half of this season, having gone out on loan to Swedish club Kristianstads DFF where she put up a explosive performance in the Damallsvenskan (highest division of women's football in Sweden) and scored a well number of goals which enabled her to be named the Icelandic Women's Footballer of the Year in December 2021.
Jónsdóttir had originally signed a contract keeping her at VfL Wolfsburg until 2024, but she has penned an early extension that ties her to VfL through to 30th, June 2025.
In my eyes when we say an intelligent, ultimate goal-poacher, am talking about a player who's capable of dropping deep to get the ball, has phenomenal scoring rates, piling through the defence and beating them like a rampaging bull and then lashing one home from anywhere, here am talking about players who don't like to leave the six yard box and would unmistakably end up notching the ball in, and there's no other female player who dexterously executes that more than Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir.
At the age of 14-years old she carried herself with the confidence of a player far more experienced. She knew what she would be capable of whenever she's unleashed onto the pitch. One of her dangerous attributes is when she cameo's from the bench as she has a natural ability to read the game and be quick off the mark with her razor-sharp reactions, master finishing and to foresee where best to position herself for goal scoring opportunities.
The tall lanky, pacy attacker, who has a knack of being exactly at the right place hunting for goals - started banging-in the goals for hometown club Keflavík ÍF were she debuted with the first team in 2015. She scored 27 goals in 19 games in the 1. deild kvenna which is the second tier women's football league in the Nordic island nation. In 2018, she helped Keflavík to a second-place finish in the 1. deild and promotion to the top-tier Úrvalsdeild kvenna after scoring 9 goals in 18 matches.
In September 17th, 2020, Jónsdóttir received her first official call-up to the Icelandic senior national team ahead of their European Championship qualifier against Latvia. She started the match and scored Iceland's second goal in the 8th minute. She later added another goal in the 32nd minute in Iceland's 9–0 victory. On 23 September she set up Iceland's goal in a 1–1 tie against Sweden.
When it comes to professional women's "goal-hangers" and goals-to-games ratio, Jónsdóttir is currently one of the best in Europe.
