Namibia and Mali progressed into the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations, following their 0-0 draw stalemate at the Stade Laurent Pokou on Wednesday night.
Namibia’s progression into the knockouts from the group stages for the first time marks an historic day in the Southern African nation history.
The Brave Warriors came into the game looking to frustrate Eric Chelle’s men, who however, took control of possession in the early stages. But it was Namibia who threatened first through Prins Tijiueza as he fired a shot into the far bottom corner but Djigui parred the shot onto the post.
Mali grew into the game steadily, having a few decent chances but Lloyd Kazapua was always at the right place to effect some fantastic saves.
The second half was fairly scrappy with both sides struggling to produce clear-cut chances. The best chance of the half came as Komory Doumbia broke past the Namibia defence before laying the ball to Ibrahim Sissoko but the cross went past the goal monger as the game remained goalless.
Mali began to threaten more in the final ten minutes, however, Namibia managed to hold the Eagles at bay to claim a valuable draw to advance into the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time. Meanwhile Mali also progressed to the last 16, claiming top spot after going unbeaten in the group (One win, two draws).
