Black Stars coach Otto Addo has stressed the urgency of securing a win against Angola to revive Ghana’s faltering bid to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The four-time African champions have endured a difficult qualifying campaign, sitting fourth in Group F with just two points after four matches. Ghana now faces the prospect of missing the AFCON for the first time in 20 years unless they secure back-to-back victories in their remaining fixtures.
Ghana's struggles began with a 1-0 defeat to Niger at the Baba Yara Stadium, followed by a 1-1 draw against the same opponents. Hopes of a resurgence in a doubleheader against Sudan were dashed as the Black Stars were held to a goalless draw at home before succumbing to a 2-0 loss in the return leg.
The Black Stars' qualification hopes were given a lifeline after Niger thrashed Sudan 4-0 on Thursday in Lomé. Ghana must now defeat Angola and Niger in their final matches while hoping Sudan falters against Angola to clinch a spot in the tournament.
Speaking ahead of Friday’s crucial encounter at the Estádio 11 de Novembro, Addo expressed confidence in his players’ mental readiness and urged them to seize the opportunity to claim their first win of the qualifiers.
“I think mentally the boys are ready. I'm looking forward to that game. It's time for our first victory in this competition,” Addo told the Ghana FA’s official website. “It’s a great opportunity to keep the chance alive.”
The high-stakes clash between the Palancas Negras and the Black Stars is set to kick off at 19:00 GMT, with Ghana aiming to turn their fortunes around and keep their AFCON dreams alive.
