Morocco has released three Senegalese supporters who were imprisoned following violent incidents during the Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat, after they completed their three-month sentences.
The trio were freed on Saturday from Al Arjat 2 prison, situated northeast of the capital, before being taken to a police station to complete final administrative procedures. They were later received by officials from the Senegalese Embassy.
One of the released fans expressed appreciation upon regaining freedom, saying “dima Maroc, dima Maghrib,” a phrase that translates to “long live Morocco.”
Their lawyer, Patrick Kabou, commended the role played by diplomatic and consular authorities in facilitating their release and called for continued support as they reintegrate into society.
The three were among several Senegalese supporters arrested after disturbances linked to the AFCON final. However, 15 others remain in custody, serving sentences ranging from six months to one year, with their convictions recently upheld on appeal.
