Al-Ahly of Egypt secured a 1-1 draw against Wydad Casablanca of Morocco on Sunday, securing their 11th CAF Champions League title and earning a prize money of $4 million.
In the second leg of the CAF Champions League final held at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, Al-Ahly's defender Mohamed Abdelmonem scored a crucial equalizer in the 78th minute, clinching the trophy for the Egyptian side.
Following their 2-1 victory in the first leg of the final in Cairo, Al-Ahly entered the second leg with a significant advantage. Despite facing a 27th-minute deficit in the second leg, they managed to hold on to secure a 3-2 aggregate victory and claim the 2022-2023 CAF Champions League title.
Wydad's defeat ended their streak of two consecutive victories against Al-Ahly in the final. Their focus on protecting their slender away goal advantage in the second leg proved costly, as they failed to find more goals.
In contrast to European competitions, where away goals have a lesser impact, in African club competitions, away goals count double. Had Wydad won the second leg with a 1-0 margin, they would have retained the trophy. However, the draw at home following their 2-1 away defeat favored Al-Ahly, crowning them as champions and earning them the historic and lucrative prize money.
Furthermore, Al-Ahly's coach, Marcel Koller, became the first manager from Switzerland to win the CAF Champions League, adding to the significance of their triumph.
