Asante Kotoko have dismissed reports suggesting that interim head coach Prince Yaw Owusu abandoned the team’s camp and training on Thursday, April 16, amid growing tensions.
In an official statement signed by Communications Director Samuel Sarfo Duku, the club described the claims as untrue, clarifying that the coach had sought permission to be away.
According to the statement, Owusu travelled to attend to urgent family matters as he continues to mourn the passing of his mother and is expected to return to Kumasi.
“The club wishes to firmly debunk rumours suggesting that Interim Head Coach Prince Yaw Owusu has left the team’s camp without notice. These claims are untrue. Prince duly sought permission from management to attend to urgent family matters as he continues to mourn the passing of his beloved mother. He is expected to return to Kumasi this morning and any further updates or decisions will be officially communicated in due course.”
Reports had earlier suggested that the interim coach failed to show up for training due to safety concerns following alleged threats from some supporters, with assistant coach Mohammed Hamza Obeng stepping in to supervise the session.
Owusu has come under pressure in recent weeks, having overseen eight matches since taking charge, recording two wins, two draws and four defeats, including a heavy 4-0 loss to Medeama SC.
The Porcupine Warriors have been struggling recently sparking frustrations among supporters who continue to call on management to appoint a substantive head coach to get the team back on track.
