The Black Starlets of Ghana may participate in the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) next year.
This possibility arises after FIFA announced the expansion of the U-17 World Cup from 24 to 48 teams. In response, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has decided to enlarge the U-17 AFCON tournament as well.
CAF is expected to make this decision official during the Executive Committee’s virtual meeting on Friday, June 21, 2024. The expansion is intended to give more young African players the chance to showcase their talents and compete at a higher level.
Ghana missed qualifying for the U-17 AFCON following a 2-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the 2024 WAFU Zone B Africa Cup of Nations semifinal.
This loss led to the unexpected resignation of head coach Laryea Kingston. Subsequently, the Black Starlets lost to Nigeria in the 3rd place match, finishing fourth.
By aligning with FIFA’s vision, CAF demonstrates its commitment to youth football development. This move not only benefits African football but also contributes to the sport's global growth.
Expanding the U-17 AFCON is a significant step forward for African football. Ghana, who have not appeared in the U-17 AFCON since 2019, hope to make a strong impression when the tournament takes place in Ivory Coast next year.
