Wales coach Craig Bellamy says the upcoming friendly against Ghana will be a key chance to push his squad to the next level.

Speaking on Tuesday after naming his 26-man group for the historic match at Cardiff City Stadium, Bellamy welcomed the challenge of taking on the African side.

“They’re two very different tests, but the kind that can really help us get better, because I’m seeing real progress in this team,” he said, referring to the double window that also includes a trip to Romania.

Bellamy stressed both personal and team development after missing out on the 2026 World Cup, adding, “We have to improve, I have to improve as a coach, and that drives me.”

It’s the first time Wales will host an African nation in a senior men’s game, making it a landmark occasion for Welsh football.

For Bellamy, it’s more than a summer friendly. It’s about reshaping the squad to handle different styles of play. With Jordan James and Rubin Colwill out injured, the game also opens the door for new players to step into the senior setup.

Facing a technical and physical Ghana side will let Wales test their tactical flexibility before a tough UEFA Nations League A campaign in September against top European teams.

For Carlos Queiroz’s Ghana, the match is important World Cup preparation. The Black Stars will meet England, Croatia, and Panama in the group stage.

Playing against a British-style team in Cardiff gives Ghana a chance to sharpen their tactics in a competitive environment.
