Asante Kotoko Communications Director Sarfo Duku has strongly condemned goalkeeper Mohammed Camara’s conduct during last Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round first-leg defeat to Wydad Athletic Club at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Porcupine Warriors were reduced to ten men while trailing 1-0 after Camara was shown a straight red card for handling the ball outside the penalty area. The dismissal was followed by a moment of frustration from the goalkeeper, who appeared to push the referee — an act that could attract further disciplinary sanctions from CAF if reported.
Speaking to Luv FM, Sarfo Duku described Camara’s behaviour as unsporting and regrettable, urging players to maintain composure even in tense moments.
“I think the behaviour he displayed was unsporting and quite unfortunate because it could attract further sanctions from the football controlling body, CAF. Sometimes when players are frustrated, these things happen, but that was not the right way to react. It’s bad,” Duku said.
He added that while the club understands the player’s emotions, such actions cannot be condoned.
“We are working on that — not just him, but all the players. Anyone can lose their temper in such moments. You can understand his frustration, playing in front of our passionate fans with so much expectation, conceding a goal, and then facing another threat. Still, it’s something we condemn and hope won’t happen again.”
Asante Kotoko are set to travel to Casablanca on Wednesday, where they will attempt to overturn the 1-0 deficit in Friday’s second leg, without their first-choice goalkeeper, Mohammed Camara.
