Laryea Kingston, the head coach of the Black Starlets, acknowledged the pivotal role played by his coaching staff in steering the team to victory against Cote d’Ivoire in the 2024 WAFU B U17 Cup of Nations.
Despite facing challenges during the match, Kingston credited his staff's intervention for maintaining their original game plan, ultimately resulting in a convincing 5-1 win.
Reflecting on the match, Kingston revealed, “At a point in time in the game, I wanted to change to a 3-4-3 system because we started with a 4-3-3 one but when I spoke with my technical team, they told me to stick to our original plan because it was working."
The decision proved to be pivotal as Joseph Narbi netted a brace in the first half, giving the Starlets a comfortable 2-0 lead. Godfred Sarpong extended their advantage just after halftime, before Côte d’Ivoire managed to pull one back.
However, the resilience of the Starlets shone through as Harve Gbafa restored their three-goal lead with 15 minutes remaining. Mark Kagawa Mensah sealed the victory in stoppage time, capping off a dominant performance for Ghana.
With their sights set on further success, the Black Starlets will conclude their group stage campaign on Tuesday, May 21, with a clash against Benin.
