After their historic qualification for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Morocco aimed to extend their success to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. However, their hopes were dashed by a determined Zambian team eager to join the prestigious event.
Zambia clinched qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games by defeating Morocco in an intense match at the Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat. The thrilling encounter ended with a 2-0 victory for Zambia, securing a 3-2 aggregate lead.
The game saw both teams fiercely contesting for an early advantage. Despite a deadlock in the first 30 minutes, Zambian forward Barbra Banda broke through in the 38th minute, scoring the opening goal.
In the second half, Morocco dominated possession but failed to convert their chances. Zambia sealed victory during extra time, with team captain Banda converting a penalty for the second goal.
Now qualified, Zambia finds itself in Group B alongside soccer powerhouses USA, Australia, and Germany. Their journey kicks off against the USWNT on July 25 in Nice, followed by matches against Australia on July 28 and Germany on July 31.
Coach Bruce Mwape has a talented squad, including stars like Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji, both having excelled in international leagues. Despite the formidable opposition, Zambia remains confident in their ability to compete at the highest level.
In addition to Zambia, Nigeria's Super Falcons secured their spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics. They defeated South Africa 1-0 on aggregate, with Rasheedat Ajibade scoring the crucial goal. This marks Nigeria's return to the Olympics after 16 years, adding further excitement to the African representation at the prestigious event.
