KAA Gent midfielder Elisha Owusu has opened up on his debut call-up to play for the senior national team of Ghana.
Owusu received his maiden invitation to the Black Stars for the all-important 2022 FIFA World Cup final qualification games against Nigeria in March.
The 25-year-old has revealed in his recent interview with Star Connect that he was surprised when he was invited by interim coach Otto Addo for the playoffs against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
He made his debut in the reverse fixture which ended 1-1 to ensure Ghana a qualification to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
“I was a little bit surprised because it was a really important game. I was in the squad before and to be called for those two games I was like ‘wow so big," Owusu said on Star Connect.
“I was happy and so proud. My family was very proud.”
“As a player, that is the type of game you want to play,” he added.
“I think every player wants to feel this kind of pressure, this kind of difficulty game, a game that can decide a lot of things for your career.
“I was excited and motivated to be there. If you were part of the squad, you’re a part of the squad that qualified [Ghana] to the World Cup which is amazing. It’s history.”
Owusu was included in Ghana's squad for the 2022 World Cup but he couldn't earn minutes at the mundial.
Before the World Cup, he displayed a five-star performance against Switzerland in Ghana's final friendly game for the tournament.
