Ghanaian defender Alidu Seidu sustained a significant knee injury during Stade Rennais' Ligue 1 match against Lille on Sunday evening.
The Black Stars right-back was forced off the pitch after just 17 minutes, following an awkward landing that ruptured the cruciate ligaments in his left knee.
Seidu received several minutes of on-field treatment before being substituted by Senegalese defender Mikayil Faye. He was later seen on crutches, sparking concerns about the severity of his condition.
Rennais head coach Jorge Sampaoli refrained from making any definitive assessments but confirmed that Seidu would undergo a scan on Monday to determine the full extent of the injury.
"I can't diagnose; we will do tests tomorrow," Sampaoli told reporters post-match.
The match ended in disappointment for Rennes, as Edon Zhegrova’s first-half goal secured a 1-0 victory for Lille at the Decathlon Arena-Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
Seidu, who joined Rennes in January 2024, has quickly established himself as a key player for the club, even winning the team’s Player of the Month award for September. His injury is a major blow for both Rennes and the Ghana national team, especially considering the 24-year-old also missed Ghana’s recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger due to a prior injury.
Fans and teammates will now await updates on Seidu's condition as he prepares for what could be a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
