Ghanaian midfielder Lawrence Agyekum was on target early for Cercle Brugge, but his side ultimately fell 4-2 to Beerschot in a Belgian First Division A Relegation Group encounter on Saturday.
Agyekum opened the scoring in the 6th minute with a well-placed finish from the center of the box, following a clever assist from Erick Nunes. The 21-year-old, who was making his 34th appearance of the season, put in a lively performance before being substituted in the 57th minute.
Cercle Brugge went into halftime with the lead, but Beerschot came out strong in the second half and quickly flipped the script. Greek defender Apostolos Konstantopoulos netted twice in the space of two minutes (48th and 50th), putting the visitors ahead. Loïc Mbe Soh and Faisal Al-Ghamdi each converted from the penalty spot to extend Beerschot’s lead.
Paris Brunner grabbed a stoppage-time consolation goal for Brugge, but it was too little, too late. Despite their early advantage, Cercle Brugge struggled to assert control, finishing with just 37% possession and managing 13 shots compared to Beerschot’s 23.
Beerschot’s victory narrows the historical head-to-head gap, though Cercle Brugge still lead with 10 wins to Beerschot’s five.
