Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo has spoken passionately about his family’s deep emotional connection to Ghana’s World Cup history as he looks ahead to representing the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

In an interview with FIFA, the Ghana international revealed how watching the Black Stars at previous World Cups became a special family tradition while growing up in England.

“My mum and dad are Ghana through and through,” Semenyo said.

“I feel like watching Ghana play in the World Cup was so special. Mum, Dad, uncles, aunties, cousins all turn up to one house, and we’ll watch all the games together, celebrating, screaming, all the emotions and above.”

The 25-year-old also reflected on Ghana’s unforgettable run to the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, particularly the dramatic clash against Uruguay.

“I remember being at my uncle’s house and we were screaming after the handball, thinking we were going through,” he recalled.

Although the match ended heartbreakingly following Asamoah Gyan’s missed penalty and Ghana’s eventual elimination on penalties, Semenyo admitted the experience only deepened his admiration for the Black Stars.

The forward, who made his senior Ghana debut in 2022, also stated that choosing to represent Ghana was never a difficult decision despite being born and raised in England.

“Ghana came in when I was 19 or 20, so I was never going to turn it down,” he added.

Semenyo is now expected to play a major role for Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a remarkable season in which he has established himself as one of the country’s leading attacking players.
