Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey has revealed his ambition to blend the attacking flair of Yaya Toure with the defensive steel of Michael Essien as he continues to find top form for Arsenal.
The 31-year-old delivered a commanding display in Arsenal's 3-0 victory over Real Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal last week and followed it up with a goal in the Gunners’ 1-1 draw against Brentford at the Emirates Stadium over the weekend.
Speaking to *Sky Sports*, Partey reflected on his evolving role and the inspiration he draws from two of Africa’s iconic midfielders.
"I like to be both defensive and offensive. I know that whenever I'm in the attacking area, there's a chance I can score, but defensively, I want to be stronger," he said.
"I want to attack like Yaya Toure and defend like Michael Essien. Having both qualities is what I’m aiming for," Partey added.
Arsenal, meanwhile, are hopeful the Ghanaian will be fit for the return leg against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday, after he was substituted with a knock in the first-leg clash.
