Promising English-born defender of Ghanaian descent, Josh Acheampong, has signed a new long-term contract with Chelsea, keeping him at the club until 2029.
The announcement was made by the Blues on Wednesday, ending months of speculation about his future.
Acheampong’s contract situation had been uncertain in recent months, with negotiations between the club and his representatives reaching a standstill. During this period, the young defender was frozen out of the team. However, progress in talks recently saw him reintegrated into the squad, culminating in his impressive performances.
The 18-year-old made his full debut for Chelsea in their Europa Conference League victory over Astana in Kazakhstan last week. He also earned a spot on the bench during Chelsea’s Premier League win against Brentford on Sunday, signaling growing trust in his abilities at the senior level.
Acheampong has been a standout performer for Chelsea's youth teams but is yet to make a senior international appearance. He remains eligible to represent both England and Ghana at the national level.
On the international stage, Acheampong showcased his talent with England’s Under-17 team during the 2023 UEFA European Under-17 Championship and further impressed at the FIFA U-17 World Cup later that year.
