The Mahamasina Municipal Stadium is set to host a highly anticipated showdown between Ghana and Madagascar in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier this Sunday at 2 pm local time.

While Ghana seeks a victory to secure their qualification, Madagascar, although out of contention, is determined to challenge the four-time African champions.

Currently rooted at the bottom of the group with just one point from four games, Madagascar's hopes of advancing have been extinguished. They find themselves seven points behind second-placed Angola, effectively ruling them out of next year's tournament.

In contrast, Ghana has performed better in the qualifiers, positioning themselves favorably for progression. They have achieved two victories, including an impressive 3-0 win over Madagascar at the Cape Coast Stadium, and secured draws in the remaining two matches.

Tied with Angola on eight points, the Black Stars are in a prime position to secure qualification. A win against Madagascar would guarantee their advancement. However, a draw would necessitate avoiding defeat in their final game against third-placed Central African Republic, who have accumulated seven points, to secure their spot.

The previous official encounter between the two teams was their first match of the qualification series, in which Ghana emerged victorious with a 3-0 scoreline, courtesy of goals from Mohammed Kudus, Felix Afena-Gyan, and Osman Bukari.

Among Madagascar's newly appointed manager, Rakotondrabe's 29-man squad, key players include Toky Rakotondraibe and Tokiniaina Randriatsiferana, the top scorers in the local league. Unfortunately, Ratchaburi FC attacker Njiva Rakotoharimalala has been ruled out due to injury. Former Minnesota United player Romain Metanire has earned a spot in the team, while Rayan Raveloson of AJ Auxerre will miss out due to personal reasons.

Black Stars coach Chris Hughton has confirmed a squad of 24 players for the upcoming match. Gideon Mensah's absence due to injury has been confirmed, alongside Tariq Lamptey, Antoine Semenyo, Mohammed Salisu, Baba Rahman, and Inaki Williams. Arsenal's Thomas Partey is expected to play a crucial role, supported by Mohammed Kudus, Jordan Ayew, Joseph Paintsil, and Osman Bukari.

With the withdrawal of Inaki Williams, Hafiz Konkoni, who netted 15 goals in the Ghana Premier League, will compete for a starting position. Joseph Aidoo and Daniel Amartey are likely to form the central defensive partnership.
