Henry Asante Twum, Communication Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has announced that defender Patric Pfeiffer will not be part of the Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Pfeiffer, who currently plays for Young Boys and recently acquired his Ghanaian passport, was expected to be included in the squad for the crucial matches against Angola and Niger. However, a muscle injury has sidelined him, as confirmed by Twum during a press conference on Thursday, August 29.
The injury comes as a setback for Pfeiffer, who has been awaiting his debut for the Black Stars since switching allegiance to Ghana in 2022. He joins other injured players including Kamaldeen Sulemana, Ernest Nuamah, Salis Abdul Samed, and Gideon Mensah, all of whom will also miss the upcoming fixtures.
Despite Pfeiffer's absence, notable players such as Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, Antoine Semenyo, Mohammed Salisu, and Jordan Ayew have been named in the 23-man squad. Captain Andre Ayew, currently without a club, has been overlooked for the second consecutive squad selection.
The Black Stars will face Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium on September 5, followed by a match against Niger in Morocco on September 9. These qualifiers are crucial for Ghana’s bid to secure a spot in the 2025 AFCON, with the top two teams from each group earning automatic qualification to the continent’s premier tournament.
