Ghana coach Chris Hughton has dismissed early comparisons between midfielder Majeed Ashimeru and Thomas Partey, despite Ashimeru's energetic and resilient performance in Ghana's 2026 World Cup qualifier against Madagascar.
Ashimeru, who returned to the 25-man squad after missing the previous games due to injury, was lauded for his standout performance when introduced in the second half. Ghana secured a narrow victory at the Baba Yara Stadium with a late goal from Inaki Williams.
Hughton emphasizes that Ashimeru and Partey are distinct players, each bringing unique abilities that complement the team. He stated, "I wouldn't say Majeed is a successor to Partey. Partey is a more technical and creative player, and Majeed is a runner. We knew that he was lacking match practice, but he is a player that was good in Angola away from home. We are always looking out for any player that is bringing us something different."
As the team prepares to face Comoros in their next game on Tuesday in Moroni, Hughton recognizes the diverse strengths each player brings to the squad.
