Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Football Association, Henry Asante Twum has clarified that, the decision for the Black Stars to camp in South Africa was solely taken by head coach Chris Hughton and not the FA as speculated.
The four-time African champions will be playing at the AFCON for the tenth consecutive time and are in serious preparations hoping to have themselves adequately ready and poised for the competition.
The Ghana FA couple of days ago, announced that, the team will camp in South Africa for weeks before they head to Cote D'Ivoire for the main competition and have arranged a friendly game against Botswana on January 8.
The decision faced a huge backlash from the Ghanaian football fans who strongly disagreed with the decision and have started their queries, requesting for answers as to how that decision was arrived when the competition will be held in Cote D'Ivoire.
In a recent interview, Henry Asante Twum stated emphatically clear that, the GFA didn't take the decision to move to the south for camping but was rather a decision taken by coach Chris Hughton
“It's interesting how this discussion is going. All of a sudden, nobody is thinking about the influence of coaches in these kinds of situations."
“I want to put on record that the decision to camp in South Africa is the sole decision of the coach. He made a proposal to the FA, and we approved it through the Youth and Sports Ministry."
“The decision to camp in South Africa wasn't taken by Kurt Okraku but the head coach of the team.”
“We have provided the needed support to the technical team since they took office and have always allowed them to work independently, so all the FA did was to grant them approval when they presented their proposal/plan to leadership", he concluded
Ghana are placed in Group B alongside Egypt, Cape Verde and Mozambique.
The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is slated for January 13, 2024.
