Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu has voiced concerns over the deteriorating state of stadium infrastructure in Ghana, questioning how the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is utilizing its funds.

His remarks come amid growing frustration from football fans and citizens over the poor maintenance of sports facilities, which has led to sanctions from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), including a ban on the Baba Yara Stadium.

Speaking during parliamentary proceedings on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, Iddrisu—who also owns Ghana Premier League club Karela United—criticized the GFA for not prioritizing stadium improvements.

“Currently, I use the Aliu Mahama Stadium as the venue for Karela. Even for the pitch, it is not the state or the National Sports Authority. We’ve had to fix it for our purposes in order to meet the minimum requirements of the GFA,” he said.

The former Minority Leader further questioned how the GFA allocates its revenue, arguing that funds generated by the Black Stars during international tournaments should be enough to improve stadium facilities across the country.

“The GFA, what are they spending their money on? You must raise those questions for every tournament because even just participating, you’d marvel at how much money Ghana makes,” he added.

His comments add to the ongoing debate about the need for better sports infrastructure management and accountability in Ghanaian football.
