Former Black Princesses coach Robert Sackey has reservations about the potential success of Jose Mourinho as the head coach of the Black Stars, especially if appointed just before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in January 2024.
Sackey emphasizes that the current challenges facing the Black Stars pose significant hurdles for any coach aiming for positive results. He argues that, given the limited time before the tournament, replacing the current head coach, Chris Hughton, would not be a wise decision.
In an interview with Asempa FM, Sackey draws parallels to a similar scenario in 2006, where a coaching change before a major tournament led to the team's struggles. He contends that retaining Hughton is the more prudent choice considering the imminent start of the Africa Cup of Nations.
"It's about psyching. How to be able to motivate the players to go and perform," Sackey explained. "I feel we should keep the coach because it is too late to sack him." He further stated, "If we sack him and even bring Jose Mourinho, he cannot be able to perform because it is not easy."
Sackey's concerns arise amid speculations about Hughton's future with the Black Stars, fueled by recent disappointing results. His perspective underscores the importance of stability and continuity, suggesting that, at this stage, taking a risk with a new coach, even one as experienced as Jose Mourinho, might not be the optimal choice.
