Highly-rated coach Hervé Renard has emerged as a leading candidate to take over the Black Stars job, with the Ghana Football Association currently in advanced talks with the experienced French tactician ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana’s search for a new coach follows the dismissal of Otto Addo after a disappointing March international window, where the team suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria in Vienna before losing 2-1 to Germany in Stuttgart.

In his second stint, Addo managed 22 matches, recording eight wins, nine defeats and five draws, with 35 goals scored and 28 conceded, as inconsistency ultimately led to his exit.

With time not on their side, the GFA has shifted focus to potential replacements, with Renard’s name gaining strong momentum due to his vast experience and success at  international level especially in Africa.

The 56-year-old has recently parted ways with Saudi Arabia, where he had been in charge since 2024, and is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most successful coaches.

Renard is also a two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner, having guided Zambia to the 2012 title and Côte d’Ivoire to glory in 2015, further strengthening his credentials as a top candidate for the role.

Negotiations between Renard and the GFA are ongoing, with discussions centered around contract length, his technical team, and other conditions before a final decision is reached.

Other candidates being considered for the role include Kwesi Appiah, Tom Saintfiet and Éric Chelle etc.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama, and will be aiming to finalize their coaching situation in time to prepare adequately for the tournament
