In an effort to contemporize Ghana's football ecosystem and position it with global standards, FIFA is set to host a focal meeting with representatives from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and key stakeholders.

The meeting, which aims to speed up the implementation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in Ghana’s domestic leagues, is scheduled to cover essential logistical, financial, and operational aspects required for a successful rollout.

The introduction of VAR technology is seen as a crucial step in enhancing the accuracy and transparency of officiating in Ghana’s top leagues. Although widely adopted in several major leagues worldwide, the technology is relatively new to African domestic competitions.

Ghana’s journey toward adopting VAR began with initial feasibility studies and technical evaluations by both FIFA and GFA officials, who believe that this technology can positively transform the football landscape in Ghana.

During the discussions, FIFA representatives will outline the technical and infrastructural prerequisites for VAR implementation, from referee training programs to equipment procurement and integration with existing broadcast systems. Additionally, the conversation is expected to address concerns regarding funding, with the GFA exploring potential collaborations and sponsorships to finance this monumental project.

The meeting will also include discussions on how VAR technology can be integrated with Ghana’s local refereeing standards and how it might impact the pace and flow of games in the league. Representatives from various Ghanaian clubs have already voiced support for VAR, noting that it can reduce controversial officiating decisions and increase trust among fans.

If successful, this VAR initiative could mark a new era for Ghanaian football, strengthening the integrity of the domestic leagues and enhancing the overall match experience for players, coaches, and fans alike.

The two-day meeting, scheduled for October 31 and November 1, 2024, will take place in Accra.
