Ghana and Mexico have deepened diplomatic and cultural relations through football, officials from both nations engaged in high-level discussions to boost cooperation through sport, notably football.



Football, a unifying force across nations, was a key focus of the meeting. They also discussed how to expand the partnership into formal exchange programmes for athletes, coaches, and sports administrators.



“For many Ghanaians, their first introduction to Mexican culture came through football,” Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams said. “Whether it's watching World Cup highlights or following legendary Mexican players, the connection runs deep.”



Mexico’s Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Norma Ang, said the collaboration aims to explore shared values and create long-term people-to-people links. “From grassroots football to institutional cooperation,” which will be an historic step.



The meeting was attended by senior figures in Ghanaian football, including the Vice President of the Ghana Football Association.



Talks covered a range of initiatives, including grassroots development programmes, support for women’s football, and the possibility of co-hosted football festivals celebrating the sporting traditions of both nations.



With the 2026 FIFA World Cup which will be co-hosted by Mexico on the horizon, Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, voiced the country’s backing and enthusiasm.



Discussions also touched on visa facilitation for fans and delegations, potential training camp opportunities ahead of the tournament, and collaborative tourism packages designed to benefit both countries.



Both delegations concluded by reaffirming football’s role as a powerful tool for youth empowerment, cultural exchange, and the strengthening of bilateral ties.



The collaboration follows a growing trend of countries using football as a tool of soft power and public diplomacy, particularly across Africa and Latin America.
