Ryan Bertrand, the former Chelsea left-back, is optimistic that Ghana will be adequately prepared for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) despite recent lackluster performances in October.
The Black Stars suffered two friendly match losses to Mexico and the USA within a three-day period, conceding six goals while failing to score. These performances led to fans expressing their displeasure about the team's commitment, especially with the AFCON just over two months away.
Bertrand, who is making his first visit to Ghana, believes that Chris Hughton, the coach, will have enough time to rectify issues before the tournament in January.
"Yeah, I think first of all, football, be it international or domestic tournament football, anything can happen. There are times when you are not in the best form and end up doing well. Conversely, you can be in great form and underachieve," Bertrand said in an exclusive interview with 3Sports.
He highlighted the value of recent matches against the USA and Mexico as beneficial tests due to different playing styles and opposition. Bertrand expressed confidence in Chris Hughton's ability to prepare the team for the upcoming tournament.
Bertrand drew a comparison between England and Ghana in terms of rebuilding their squads and encouraged Ghanaians to be patient with the process.
He mentioned England's transition phase, where they identified promising young talents and constructed pathways in international football for these talents. This transition has enabled England to compete successfully at the international level.
Bertrand acknowledged the emergence of talented players like Mohammed Kudus and Ernest Nuamah in Ghana and stated that building a competitive squad would be a process, emphasizing the importance of patience.
Ghana is placed in Group B for the AFCON, alongside record-winners Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique. Bertrand's visit to Ghana aims to strengthen collaboration with the Koppan Sports Agency to contribute to the country's football development.
