Former Ghana international Habib Mullah Mohammed has voiced his concerns after there have been incessant calls for the inclusion of home-based players into the Black Stars.

Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Frederick Asare was the only local player to have earned a spot in Otto Addo’s 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifying games against Mali and Central Africa Republic.

Mohammed, believes that handling call-ups to players who ply their trade in the domestic league, currently, won't do the Black Stars any good.

He was part of the Black Stars side that featured in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Habib made two appearances (180 minutes) in the mundial, before he lost his place in the national team after the World Cup.

In an interview with Kessben FM, Habib highlighted the disparity in performance between local based players and their foreign based colleagues.

“It’s too early to call for the inclusion of home-based players into the Black Stars. I played for the Black Stars as a local player in 2006, I think we need to ask ourselves how good and strong our local league was at that time. The league was very competitive," he said.

“I won the overall best defender in the 2004/2005 league season. So I merited the call up. So now the best thing we need to do is to put the right things in order so our local league can be very competitive like it used to. And when that happens any local player that will earn a call up, will be merited.”
