Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has issued an apology to Ghanaians following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Ghana, a four-time AFCON champion, endured a disastrous qualification campaign, securing no wins in six matches. The Black Stars lost three games and drew three, finishing at the bottom of Group F with just three points. This marks the first time in 20 years that Ghana has missed out on the prestigious continental tournament, with their last absence dating back to 2004.
As the nation reels from the Black Stars’ disappointing performance, which included a 2-1 defeat to Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium in the final round, Asante Twum acknowledged the frustration felt by the public.
“I would like to apologize to Ghanaians for the massive disappointment of not qualifying for the AFCON,” he told Asempa FM. “I have followed the Black Stars for two decades, and I have never seen anything like this before. We went into qualifiers, played six games, and didn’t win a single one. I have never witnessed that before.”
With the Black Stars finishing outside the top two in Group F, they will miss the AFCON tournament scheduled to take place in Morocco next year. The team’s attention will now shift to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which will begin next year.
